Video export too light

I'm editing on a PC using AVID Media Composer. Source material id from a Canon 550D shooting 1080/25i.
When exporting to SD .mov the output is much lighter when played in quicktime than it has been in my edit software. I tried RGB colourspace (which I believe is kinda wrong) that is better but still slightly lighter.
What gives?

I've outputted stuff before but I swear this didn't happen. Maybe I just missed it or used a different workflow.

This is the dreaded "gamma problem" and as far as I know, no one has a solution. It's insane.

Even worse -- if you upload that .mov to youtube or vimeo, it will probably look too dark upon playback.
