Using Rode Videomic for street interviews

I need to do some street interviews with a presenter and the Rode Videomic is the only mic I have. I'm gonna buy an extension cord and have the presenter hold the mic and speak into it and interview people. aswell.

The videomic's probably not the best choice for this but it's the only option I have. Will the results be really bad or passable? Any advice for me? what settings I should use?(I have magic lantern for my Canon 550d)

Anywhere from total garbage to usable.


It all depends upon...

How well your interviewer handles the mic.

How much interference the extension picks up.

If your levels are relatively constant.

If the audio settings on your camera is set properly

How your audio post is handled..

Could you give me some advice on the "if your audio settings on camera is set properly" part?

I'm relatively new to using a boom mic on this camera as well as magic lantern. I've spent a lot of time playing around with it but just incase there's anything I don't know.

No matter what you do, you cannot and will not hear the audio actually being recorded by a current DSLR camera, so you are always guessing. There are times when visual levels show "good" and the actual recording is distorted in one way or another. So practicing is going to be essential.

Not to mention the crappy audio pre-amps...

I haven't worked with DSLRs - with or without Magic Lantern - so have no advice to give other than what I already have; except maybe to get an inexpensive digital audio recorder (Tascam DR-05, DR-08). At least you are not tethered to the camera and can monitor the actual audio while it is being recorded.
