They probably want a cropped image, rather than a letterboxed image or a squeezed image.

I don't think so. While I can't get into specifics at this time, Having my own dealings with Amazon, not to mention being a long time seller, the issue of letterboxing did not come up. While Amazon does have some strict requirements, letterboxing is not one of them. I think there is another issue at play here and perhaps the OP ought to address it.
