Union vs Non-Union

Shooting SAGINDIE modified low-budget contract. Does anyone know of some resources for reading about non-union vs union crew in Los Angeles? I don't want the production to get shut down, but obviously I'd like to shoot non-union if possible. What's the loophole here?

You don't need to use a union crew for a SAG shoot. You can use union crew members but don't become a signatory with the IATSE otherwise all of your crew MUST then be union.

Look at the book Creative Producing from A to Z by Schreibman which has a lot of info on union/non-union issues.

SagIndie has their own website... http://www.SagIndie.com

You've probably been there already; just tossing it out in case you have not.

Specifically, here is the Modified Low Budget Agreement (well, summary):

http://www.sagindie.com/contracts/mlba.html

It mentions nothing about crew, but it does mention you are screwed if you do not attain a theatrical release... talent compensation pops up to "basic", retroactively.

You *will* be a signatory with SAG (no idea of the impact with crew peeps, for this)... but it also seems to indicate that many details can be negotiated with appropriate representation.

Your producer's legal-eagle should be able to answer relevant crew questions. Clearly your producer has retained one... as (s)he is signing legal contracts with a union... right?
