Travel Documentary Concept

I'm new here and reaching out for some help. I'd like as much input as possible. The beauty of forums, collaboration. I apologize if this is not the right section of the forum, it seemed most fitting for the topic.

I will be taking a trip this winter across the western United States in search of epic snowboarding. The tentative itinerary. Drive north from Los Angeles in December, some money in the bank, my truck fitted with a camper shell and the bed of the truck filled with snowboard and winter camping gear. Headed up the 395 towards Tahoe then north to the Cascade mountains, east to Jackson Hole, and south to the Colorado Rockies. Total time spent on the road trip, 2 months, with a minimum amount of time spent in hotels. Along the way I will reach out to local residents as much as possible, I want to see what makes local ski town residents tick and their views on society, the ecosystem and passion for the mountains. Along with this, really get some epic shots of back country snowboarding and landscape.

Here is where the input part comes in. Not only would I like to cover the things listed above but I am a recovering addict. I'd love to tell my story or a friends story from childhood to addiction, recovery, and the pursuit of happiness and joy found in the mountains. The open mindedness that it takes to embark on a journey like that. Freedom from society's "norm", putting aside whatever job and leaving ones comfort zone to really find out what makes us tick, and what possibilities and facts about ones self it can expose. I originally dismissed the idea, I didn't think it was proper to document your own life or your story, like it is a bit egotistical.

What are your ideas? What could be added or subtracted to give the film a more distinct purpose. How bout issues around the U.S. that could use more coverage?

Thanks
Shane

How about sticking to the original story idea? :hmm:

There's an awful lot of distractions that you're introducing. I'm sure all of them have great stories waiting to be told, but trying to mash everything into one film will be doing no great service to any particular aspect.

Focus.

I agree with Zensteve. The original concept sounds like one film while your other idea sounds like a completely different story. While I think you might be able to pull off the meshing the two that will be challenging for any director, let alone a newbie

thanks

appreciate that. your right story would be far too complex to mesh all those things together. any opinion on which sounds better. I'd almost like to document riding more than anything and the trip. no politics, no addiction story.. just the idea of giving up an apartment, and bills related to it and taking off for the journey.

thank you for the input seriously, the idea of meshing all those things together was a little overwhelming.
