watch Trailer for Land of the Little Peopl

Thanks! After working on a piece a very long time you lose the touch and have difficult time to know how it works. I've placed it here as a test run before going to do the sound mix.

Excellent work! The cinematography, concept, music, acting, and grading is nice.

But there were a few things that bothered me. First off, it was a bit long and slowly paced. I have no problem with slow films and trailers, but many do. If you want your film to be successful, you have to get into the action.

What's the point of me posting those two random gifs? I'm trying to get your attention, and that's what a good trailer should do. You have to get your audience's attention. They should drop what they're doing and begin watching.

10 seconds of titles, 10 seconds of landscape shots, titles, and a kid running? NO! A kid pointing a gun at a guy ready to shoot? Cool! Yes! Keep that, actually, you can begin the trailer with that. Epic music? Yes! 20 seconds of a kid running around? No. A guy covered in blood about to fall off of a cliff? YES!

A trailer has to begin and end with a BAM!

Let's look at the five most successful films of all time:

1 Avatar
2 Titanic
3 The Avengers
4 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
5 Iron Man 3

Let's watch some trailers.

Opens with a quick shot of a guy's eyes, then some awesome CG followed by more CG, action, and fighting.

Expensive underwater shots, epic music, a dramatic voiceover, and DiCaprio.

The Avengers had an epic trailer, Harry Potter had an epic trailer, and IM3 had an epic trailer, all with strong openings.

I am comparing apples to oranges? Okay, let's compare apples to apples.

Clever gimmick at the beginning. Gets people's attention. Increasingly creepy as the trailer goes on.

How about El Mariachi?

Action, romance, suspense, and epic music are in the trailer. As well as a clever opening with a professional sounding voiceover.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that your trailer shouldn't be artsy shots, titles, and landscape clips. You need to get into the action, and keep the audience interested throughout. Many people will judge a trailer based upon the first 10-20 seconds. Get into the action. Quick editing. Loud sounds. Epic music. Handheld action. Less titles. Get into it!

I think the trailer is fantastic. Looks like the kind of film I would watch, but in order to get the film distributed, shown, and watched, you have to have a strong trailer that will keep people with short attention spans interested.

Anyway, good luck! I think it looks awesome and I can't wait to see it :)

Wow, thanks. And yes, you are right. The thing is that we didn't shoot the movie yet. It's just a few bits of scenes that I made for the trailer. I wish I had more visuals to work with. When working on a trailer like this, which in a lot of ways precede the working on the film itself, it makes you want to make it as a little film (a big mistake and that's why I wrote new scenes that aren't in the original script). I try to find the balance between having some chopped shots and keeping the essence of the drama. And this film is an intense drama more then a horror movie, so I'm walking on a very thin line here. Don't you think?

No problem!

 Yes.

It's very difficult to make a trailer without the film done, as well as making an intense drama and crossing the border over to horror.

Alejandro González Iñárritu usually makes great trailers for his intense dramas, as well as Michael Haneke.
