TIPS/TRICKS Floating dust and flying mud..?

Hi, I have two effects I would like to achieve..

-One will be a dusty saloon, with shafts of light.. In the shafts of light, I'd like to have dust particles catching the light and floating around.

-The second effect will be mud and grit being kicked around during a high energy dance scene.

I have ideas on how to achieve the effects varying from practical effects to aftereffects. However, I suspect there are some great tips and tricks out there for the look I am trying to get..

thanks so much!!

polcan99 (a contributor here) has a youtube video covering this... look it up, it's a good tutorial... for examples of doing this artificially, lots of compositing, roto and motion tracking.

I hate to sound silly, but is "real dust" not an option?

We shot a scene once with strong sunlight coming through a window. To kick up some dust, we grabbed an old paperback book and repeatedly fanned the pages. The room was full of floating dust in seconds.

For sure it is! I have just seen some types of dusts that really suspend in the air and catch light.. I'd throw talc in the air, but I want little pops of light in the rays.

goose down + food processor for particles (I have no idea if this would work)
smoke from a smoke machine for dust

I like the paper back book idea though, hit the right store and you can get em by the pound!

I'm always a fan of using practical/real effects when it can be accomplished reasonably. If it is real, it will look real. But of course there are instances when it's just not possible.

Let us know how it works out and what you end up doing.
