The Scorpion Light, Opinions?

Hi Everyone,

We are a small company from Scotland, that’s right we wear Kilts and drink an abundance of whisky. We’ve developed a brand new lighting system for content creators called The Scorpion Light. It’s a sweet multi-directional, clamp on to anything, battery powered, dimmable LED light. We are currently running a KickStarter Campaign and would love to hear some of your opinions or feedback.

Brilliant!

I've been using a small eyelight on a flexible gooseneck for years. Never occurred
to me to build and sell them even though many people have asked me to do so.

I really like the concept, although it seems to me these are more of an accessory/detail lighting kit rather than primary. I don't see any discussion of the maximum output - in the example shots in the video they don't seem to be putting out a lot of light. I'd also be interested in hearing what the color qualities of the light are - your sight mentions 'skin tone heaven' so I assume you've put some thought into it, but there's not much info otherwise.

Hi it DonnedOnMe,

Yip we're currently working on some skin tone tests that will be shot in RAW, video and stills will be uploaded, we're just waiting on a delivery from the USA for our locked in Emitters. We'll be doing a 2 stop over 2 stop under and correct exposure on three skin tones, light mid and dark.

The original kickstarter video was shot on the BMPC on a Distagon 18 t4, thats now changed and we shot on the 25mm at around t3. Its looking a lot better.

Later on today, we'll be doing an interview set up with four heads, hopefully this will show how adaptable to different situations they are. I'll post link back up here.

Hi All,

The kelvin of the daylight is 5900k and tungsten is 3600K. With the skin tone tests we'll also do mixed lighting tests, amongst themselves and with Arri fresnel 650Ws, and a 575 hmi.

As for the earlier question about using the lights as a primary set, we've just released a little video showing an interview set up. The cameraman helping us out was genuinely staggered at the control he had of the frame.

The next test will be rigging inside a car.

It does look pretty good! The issue I have is I can't justify the price to my brain.

At about US$175 each, I could buy a dozen LED flashlights for just the cost of one head. This isn't to say it doesn't look like a great product... it's just that it's difficult to convince my brain it's worth the expense, especially when you consider that kickstarters have no guarantee at all.

Can we get camera settings for the opening of that interview, to get a better idea of light output?

On vimeo it's got this in the description:

"Shot on Black magic Pocket Camera, ASA 800, Zeiss Distagon 18mm t 4."

So it looks like it's a decent amount of light considering that's not a particularly sensitive setup. And while it's true you could get a dozen LED flashlights for the price of one head, I'm thinking the cost of 48 stands to mount them on for a shoot like this might offset the savings on the lights...
