editing The predictability of news editing

Okay, this forum is about independent filmmaking, but any editor would recognize the cliche traps that are easy to fall into (think slow-mo group shot walking toward you in step). This example is from my old haunting grounds -news - and I almost fell off the chair laughing, but it shows us some well beaten patterns that viewers like us think makes news packages look professional, but are really tired depictions.

What are some film shot sequences you feel are WARN OUT!

That's great.

Did anyone else notice in Unstoppable that every other $(*#&$king shot was a circular dolly around the person who was talking?

"dolly around Denzel in the train"
"dolly around the lady in the headquarters"
"dolly around Denzel in the train"
"dolly around the lady in the headquarters"
"dolly around Denzel in the train"
"dolly around the lady in the headquarters"
"dolly around Denzel in the train"
"dolly around the lady in the headquarters"
"dolly around Denzel in the train"
"dolly around the lady in the headquarters"
"dolly around Denzel in the train"
"dolly around the lady in the headquarters"

OVER AND OVER AND OVER

I got so dizzy.

Jib us out of this scene to blue sky and jib us back down to the flashback.

Charlie Brooker is brilliant. There's loads of stuff from his shows Screenwipe and Newswipe on YouTube, if you fancy seeing the broadcast world get body-slammed by his caustic wit.
