The James Bond franchise is 50 years old.

Royalties from merchandising (his share of 12 billion dollars of merchandising from Star Wars), his businesses that support film businesses (like THX, Lucasart). Oh... I also heard he made a few popular movies that made a few bucks.

A great achievement indeed - even his prequels made money, and they were awful.

Albert Broccoli told his family to hold onto the 007 franchise, because it was good as gold.

I heard a story a while back but I've never found a source to confirm this: Pepsi paid Lucas $1bil for restaurant and soft drink rights for the Prequels. If the story is true, Lucas would have been able to make all 3 prequels, advertise them properly, have zero ticket sales and still make a profit.

The prequels weren't exactly awful, but they weren't up to the quality of the originals.
