The Importance of Filters?

Whats the function and importance of filters?

Each one has a different function, but here's ones that you might want to get first:

UV filter - It's transparent, and apparently blocks UV. The real reason to get it, is because it physically protects the lens. Much easier to replace a throwaway screw-on filter, than a lens assembly.

Neutral Density - available in deifferent strengths. Cuts down on light, in general, allowing you to open up the aperature without blowing out the image.

Two essential starter filters. :)

Polarizer is my key filter... then an ND after that. The PL will often make the grad unnecessary as it will darken the skies (strongest effect at 90 degrees form the angle of the sun). It'll also dial asphalt darker and leaves greener. Really helps to balance the contrast of any outdoor shots you have to do.
