The GH2, holy price jump batman!

Wow,

I remember looking at this camera right around Thanksgiving of last year, and since then it's nearly doubled in price. Why? I recently read about the Lumix G6 being a good competitor to the GH2? Thoughts?

Holy batman!! Just wait until Robin finds out!
Wow cow poop!

:woohoo:

Probably because it's a great camera and has been discontinued.
Ok I don't know but am curious too...

I bet it's because of stuff like this. Shot on GH2:

Wow. I have a feeling these things will end up being classics. Looks like I'll just have to dish out the $700+ for the body alone. Yay!

The price spike is the reason I ended up with my t3i instead of a gh2. Had I abandoned Nikon a few months ago I would have a GH2 right now. If the GH3 wasn't so expensive, then the GH2 might have dropped in price instead of increasing. Nobody wants to spend $1300 on a body when an older and cheaper GH2 can produce similar results.

I've been pretty dissapointed with the GH3 footage as well. Just doesn't have the same 'look'. I'd prefer the GH2 far more than the GH3 (call me crazy). As a musician, this sort of reminds me of what happens with classic guitars.. they just had that 'sound'

Christopher - the $750 (with kit lens) G6 looks like it will be the true GH2 replacement. Same sensor, no moire, same "look" - with the addition of 1080/60p and focus peaking. Here are a couple of side-by-sides between the G6 the hacked GH2 (please watch at 1080p):

I have a GH1, a GH2 and a GH3 - but I may just have to pick one of these things up :)

Cheers,

Bill

Bill, thanks a ton, given that its using the same chip, it looks like the G6 will be my next camera, and at a price that I can keep using my Nikon for stills. Fantastic.

I picked up my GH2 from B&H in December for $499 and am loving it. I already had a cheap zoom for it and picked up the 17mm pancake which is very fast. I'm thinking about the Panasonic 12-36mm zoom. I own an Panasonic AF100 too so I can share the lenses.

Yeah I was recommending cameras to a friend and went to grab a link on the GH2 and was left scratching my head and questioning my sanity since I had no memory of it being that price. Geez.

Checking out some of the preview footage of the G6 ungraded from camera, and it doesn't seem to have quite the same look as the gh2 :( The g5 had the same chip as the GH2 correct? And that footage isn't even on the same planet as the GH2.

Ugh, I think I may just need to bite the bullet and buy the real McCoy.

I bought my GH2 a year ago, and am quite happy with it, though I'm no D.P.

Has anyone checked the personal-view.com site to see if the G6 can be hacked?... Headed there now.

The folks on the personal-view.com site indicate the hackers must wait for a firmware update by Panasonic to hack the G6. Beyond that, I don't know enough about the differences, GH2 v. G6, to give much of a comment-- but there's some footage and other info on the site thread if you search "G6."

I plan to buy a set of Rokinon cine lenses for my GH2 this summer, and have me some fun...

Have you seen this preproduction G6 footage yet?

Anamorphic: http://vimeo.com/66013180

Anamorphic 720/50P: http://vimeo.com/66573235

1080/50p in MP4: http://vimeo.com/66666327

I don't understand why people are posting video shot at 720p or why they're using the horrible MP4 codec, but the G6 still seems to have better straight-out-of-the-box color than the GH2 did - and it doesn't seem to blow out backgrounds the way my GH2 does.

We have a few weeks until it ships - I recommend waiting to see more properly shot footage before making a decision.

Cheers,

Bill
