Something I would suggest doing that I don't hear a lot of people talk about - building your crew. I started last year making some shorts and test shoots trying to get into filmmaking and I found it to be a lot of work. Talking with some people in the local film scene I got a lot of laughs when they asked me what I did; I asked why and they replied "You haven't been doing this long as your still trying to do everything yourself."
How true that was...
Now I've joined up with 2 other filmmakers and we are making short films regularly (about 1 short film every 2 months) - our first is up on the website - http://www.checkitoutfilms.com/ and I'm working on the final editing of the second and third one while we are filming our forth as we speak (or type as the case may be).
I think this is something indie filmmakers need to look into, finding like-minded people to work with so that you can focus on your strengths and make more better films then trying to work alone.
There is some Overlap in tasks (Writer, Producer, Director, DP, Editor) as we do change roles each project. Also having some acting talent in the group goes a long way in order to make some films happen when sourcing talent for odd filming times isn't possible.
