Suitable camera for music videos? Sony NEX VG20

hi there, am looking to get a camera for shooting music videos, both for myself and others. Was looking at the Sony NEX VG20. is this gonna be suitable? pros/cons?

cheers.

Hi Will - I've shot with the VG20, and it would be a great camera for music videos. One caveat - it has consumer grade audio input and records audio in-camera at a maximum of 48kHz - if you want pro quality mic inputs and 24-bit/96kHz audio, you will need to use an external recorder like this £169 Tascam DR-40.

Instead of the overpriced kit zoom, I would get the camera body-only for £1100 at Amazon UK (1 left at this price) and a couple of inexpensive, high quality primes, such as the £109 Sigma 19mm and 30mm.

A few music videos shot with the VG20:

Hope this is helpful,

I don't know much about cameras but I just wanted to point out that you should avoid 96kHz sampling rates and stick to 48kHz. 96kHz will provide absolutely zero benefits but cost twice the disk space and twice the processing. An external audio recorder will provide other benefits; balanced inputs and much better quality mic pre-amps for example but may not be required if the music in the music video is being sourced from a studio recording rather than from the filming.

I'm sure you're right. It may not be the clock rate, but I have listened to in-camera VG20 recordings, and they are noiser than my DR-40. Unless you plan to lay down pre-recorded music, I would definitely use an external recorder for live recording with this camera.

Cheers,

Bill
