Submitting to your own Festival

Friend of mine is looking to have his own film festival/contest and the query has been if he (or people who help run it) could/should submit an entry. This would be focused towards ametures but there would be prizes (although if we don't claim a prize - no harm/foul if we screen?)

His vlog on the question:

Thoughts?

Sounds like a good way to create some negative reactions with the audience.

Do they let anyone and their mother submit? If so then it might be okay, but if there's criteria for entry and you actually are selective then it's going to look bad.

Why not? If he's going to be running the festival (and not making a profit, presumably) then he deserves to have his short shown.

Might be worth screening it out of competition but, frankly, I reckon anyone organising a film festival off their own back, deserves for their film to get registered.

Generally, even though everything is on the up and up, companies running contests do not allow their employees to enter. Even if everything is on the up and up and someone associated with the company won on merit, it would just create suspicion and negative publicity.

It may be just a casual, amateur thing like you said but if he expects it go anywhere even in that segment, I wouldn't do it.

At most I would be screen it out of the competition as Nick said.

Yeah, I've seen this done before, and the film is generally shown but out of contest as somewhat of a 'premiere' for the film - so the film still gets shown but there's no conflict of interest of the film actually being in the contest itself.
