dialogue Star Wars prequel Dialogue: Best in movie history?

Hi screen writers and film lovers in general.

I've been chatting on a forum, not to do with film making but just to do with Star Wars. Someone chimed in with 'some of the dialogue in the prequels is the best in movie history.'

I spat my brew out. I am firmly in the camp that it is drivel. Now, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am fully aware I should get other writers opinions on the matter.

So guys, 'Best Dialogue in movie history'? Or not.

It would be good as well to know everyone's experience with writing (not that it will colour my view of your opinion.)

I'm also aware the prequel bashing is so old hat now, but this really baffled me.

Cheers guys,

:)

Did this person you refer to ever actually use an example from any of the "Prequel" scripts? Cause that would be rather helpful right now.

Now this person was not saying "it's some of the best in movie history," which would allow for some argumentation and reasonable discourse. No, instead they say "Best in movie history," like nothing can compare to it. And so all I can say is, Troll. Because you have to either be so in love with Star Wars that your personal connection and context with the franchise causes you to think that way, or you just haven't watched very many older films. Because any number of famous monologues from movie history are better than the one great monologue in "Revenge of the Sith." It's a good monologue, for sure, probably the best scene out of all three prequels. But almost anything Charlton Heston has ever spoken is great dialogue. Plenty of dialogue from Jimmy Stewart deserves high praise. And we can't forget stuff from Citizen Kane.

But of course, great movie dialogue is often still elevated immensely by the actors that read that dialogue. Which of course means that if any of the actors in the Prequel Star Wars films can't make their own dialogue sound good, even if they themselves are pretty solid actors, then that should tell you that the dialogue by George Lucas in those films is doubly terrible, not "Best in Movie history."

anyone thinking its one of the best is obviously star wars biased. it really is one of the worst

Everyone I know hates the Prequel (I hate calling them prequels tbh) dialogue. Personally, I love it. It's somewhat Shakespearean.

The original movies had that kind of dialogue too, it just typically came from Vader, Obi-Wan, and the Emperor. Probably Yoda as well. All of the wise characters. Which means that Obi-wan and Qui-gon from the prequels are no different in this regard. It's consistent. But, is the dialogue from Episodes I, II, and III arguably better than Episodes IV, V, and VI?

It's generally awful, like most Lucas dialogue. I must say, though, the line that goes something like, "So this is how democracy dies —with thunderous applause." is pretty good, even subversive, and certainly topical. :)

I don't remember that line. But that is quite a nice one.

To Filmmaker J: No they didn't. The response felt quite 'trollish'.

The OT had some stinkers, but the PT really seemed to take the cake. "I wish I could wish away these feelings" "From my point of view the Jedi are evil" are really terrible. Plus the 'sand' line. There are more.

I would never call it Shakespearean. I'd call it hammy.

I don't even mind hammy, you know, when it knows what it is. Big Trouble in Little China has some of my favourite dialogue because its so chock full of exposition it hurts but is funny.

Thanks for the responses guys. :)

I completely agree. I think the lines are generally pretty poor but have diamonds in the 'sand(?)'. In addition to that, the Yoda lines always seemed forced to me. Sorry I can't give specific examples right now, but I remember them sounding almost overly 'Yoda'. Like the screenwriters said "PEOPLE LIKE THE FUNNY WAY HE TALKS LET'S MAXIMIZE THAT CONCEPT"
