Special Effects Makeup

I've been mulling over going down the road of learning special effects makeup (I blame The Walking Dead) and was wondering if anyone had any tips on products, learning resources etc...

And if anyone does Special Effects Makeup for a living, what do you always have in your kit?

I'd also suggest looking around for a makeup class. Seminole State College implemented a stage makeup class at the beginning of this year, and it's a great way to get started.

I'd actually suggest that you begin by learning basic makeup: thinning and broadening the face, simple aging makeup, learning how to use light and shadow properly. I know everyone wants to jump to the cool stuff immediately, but getting a hold of at least the basics will greatly improve the final product and hone your technique before you need to make something complex.
