Sound Equiptment Question

I plan on purchasing a dslr for video, in which case i will be using a seperate audio recorder and boom mic.

i would like some opinions on products, so i have a place to start in my own research.

what do some of you think is the best audio set up i can get for $1000, $2000, $3000?
which would be the best value? which would be the best quality?

also, can anyone recommend lavier mics? are they any good for film other than docs?

thanks a lot!

You can start with my blogs here on IndieTalk. Then use the search function, this has been discussed often.

You can get everything for less than $1k; it will sound like crap but you'll have "everything". You can spend $3k on one mic and its accessories; it will sound great but you will have nothing to plug it in to. The question is how much you want to sacrifice in terms of quality. Then you have to decide how much you are willing to invest in the time and effort to make up for the budgetary constraints on quality, and how much you are willing to compromise your artistic vision.

My advice will always be to buy the best quality you can within your budget and build on it. For $3k you can put together the basics of a good quality sound kit - recorder, mixer, shotgun mic, cardioid mic, boom pole, wind protection, cases, cables, headphones and other sundry accessories. You would add the lavs/wireless systems later on, figure a minimum of another $2.5k.

If you really want it, here's my $3k list.

Rode NTG-3 shotgun - $700

Audio-Technica AT4051b cardioid - $600

Tascam HD-P2 - $800

TOTAL - $2.1k

The rest goes to the accessories.

Personally, I think the HD-P2 isn't worth it unless you're using it for the timecode feature (which DSLRs don't have). I would rather go with a Marantz PMD661 with balanced line-level inputs.

My $3k list...
Location sound package 4 here (NTG-3 shotgun, full blimp, boom pole, cable @ $1000)

Sony MDR-7506 Headphones (Can't record sound well unless you know what you're recording. $100)

Audio-Technica AT4053b hyper-cardioid ($500)

Marantz PMD-661 Recorder ($600)
Sound Devices MixPre mixer ($660)
(Although the meters and additional flexibility of the 302 may be worth it for you)
