not much to go on..

first thought.. you actor is too worried about his hair. :)

The shadow edges are to regular.. and just looks like an oval mask, not really "in the shot" try that shot with in camera lighting effects, then add the creepy swirly visual effect on top of that....

For example, you could have easily setup lights to lighten \ darken the background areas in sequence, then add in our visual effect ...
