Set-up Advise

Hello,

I have been asked to shoot a segment of an upcoming quarterly unit meeting at my day job. These meetings are normally held in the company Cafeteria which is considerably large, spacious and has a very high ceiling (I'd say at least a story high). I intend to use a static camera, on a tripod, as my primary camera that will simply shoot the presenter head on. I am considering walking around with a palmcorder (as a secondary camera) for audience POV, reaction shots, etc (though I am not sure if this bunch is worth that effort but I'll come to a conclusion on that soon enough).

So long story short -- can I use my shotgun mic on my primary, static camera? Or, as this is an indoor shoot (granted in a very large space), should I use another type of mic? To be honest I don't know yet how far I will be from the presenter and I am working alone so I don't have a boom operator. As such I plan on mounting whichever mic on the primary camera. To add another wrinkle in this set-up issue, the presenter will be speaking into a mic that will most likely feed one or two speakers that may be facing my camera. In that case should I use a sound recording device of some sort (placed at the podium) as my sound source? If so can you name any affordable solutions?

Apologies for the barrage of questions, but sound is not my strength and I am learning to get to some decent level of proficiency, I'm just not there yet. Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

Seems the private forums don't get that much use..

I think you'd be better of tring to get a "snif" of the podium mic signal into your main camera.

The mic will go into some preamp\amplifier to make sound come out the speakers. (though, the speakers MIGHT contain the preamp and amp too.. ) Can you find out more about that? What will the podium be plugging into? If its a small mixer, then you should easily find a send or line out that you can feed right into your camera..

Another option which normally wouldn't be recommended, but for such a static situation might work for you is one of those inexpensive wireless lavaliere mics for video that Iv seen at bestbuy etc.

You would attach the little mic right on the podium mic stand. It should be small and unobtrusive, you'll need to rig some attachment (Velcro comes to mind) that you can reuse as (I assume you don't want to leave everything set up when your NOT filming ) wind screen is vital to stop those loud POPS from plosives (words that start with P.. )

Hope that helps..

also,

Dont be afraid to add ANOTHER mic to the podium.
