diy Searching for an Independent Distribution Strategy Amidst Pandemics and Streaming Wars

Just read the article. It's another classic case of "indie filmmaker learning about distribution" class 101. The more people understand the realities of the current face of indie distribution, the more they'll hopefully not lose money or at least understand what they're getting involved in. And they'll be able to pick the right distributor for their project and have realistic goals from the distribution of their film. But sadly so many people still expect MGs! Some do get them (but they're few), and when they do it's usually all the money they'll ever see. People have to remember an MG is based on what a distributor thinks they can get from the film. In the old days, a distributor would know they could make $X amount from X amount of guaranteed video sales. But these days, with video (DVD/Blu-ray) sales being minuscule with absolutely no guarantees, most distributors have no real clue what they'll get from streaming. Particularly since streaming platforms have a habit of changing the rules so frequently, favoring themselves and not the distributor/filmmaker more and more. And so a distributor cannot guarantee even a penny.

Agreed. It's kind of sad. Streaming has changed the future of filmmaking. Some think it's better for the consumer. I'm not so sure but only time will tell.
