I was just listening to Mark Wilder from Samson Technologies (www.samsontech.com) talk about Samson's new H4 "Handy Recorder" (Zoom) for $299 on Inside Mac. It has XLR connections, it's totally portable, and it records to XD memory cards. I suggest you check out the web page for details, because it has lots of great features (including stereo condensor mics, various recording formats, built in compressor/limiter, and more).
If I can find one, I'm going to order it, and I'll let you know how it checks out. I've been looking for a portable digital audio recorder with XLR inputs for recording long program audio (weddings, etc.). The least expensive portable, standalone, XLR-capable audio recorder I've found in the past has been in $1000+ price range.
