Safest place to purchase my XL2

Hello everyone. First post ever and I'm as green as a newbie can get, so please be patient with me if this is something that you have heard a million times already.

I am about to answer the call within me and get real serious about shooting a short that has been livining in my dreams for years now. I have done the research and chosen the Canon XL2 (body and lens). I want to buy this (my first serious) camera instead of rent. I am seeing prices that range from $1,000 (a price my budget loves) to $6,000 (a price my budget detests) and I really don't know why the massive range. My budget? A meager $2,500.

Questions: Are these really safe deals or are the most of them just too good to be true? Who else owns an XL2 on here? Where did you buys yours and how much did it cost? Is $2,500 too low a budget to purchase a new XL2?

Thank you.

I got lucky with my E-Bay purchase. It's an XL1s (not XL2), but I got a heck of a deal on it at the beginning of last year. The camera has so far worked flawlessly.

EDIT:

And I paid less than $1800 for my package (XL1s with 16x lens and color viewfinder, Sennheiser ME-66 with phantom power and blimp, Bogen tripod with fluid head), which is more than $200.00 less than this price and I got the tripod and mic setup on top of it:

So, I guess there are exceptions to every rule. But, again, note that I got "lucky" with this one.

Thanks for your responses.

After a bit more research and soul searching, I think I'm going to push more of the budget on lighting and sound, so an XL2 (and maybe even a DVX100B) is out of my reach for now. I can live with that for now with these shorts and a few music videos here and there, but I will have my 24p camera by the time we're in the big time with the full feature.

Anyways, I need to cut costs on the camera. Do any of you have great recommendations? Your help will be greatly appreciated. I was going to drop back to an XL1s or XL1, am I hurting myself for picture quality with those cameras? Is droping down to the GL series to much of a hit on picture quality? Any recommendations (within those price ranges) for the Panasonic, JVC, or Sony?

Thanks again.
