Resolution of on-camera add-on monitors different than camera resolution

In terms of on-camera add-on monitors, e.g. the one shown in the above picture, showing a sports shot on the screen, when one is shooting 4K footage with a 4K camera, if the on-camera add-on monitor has a maximum resolution of 1080p, then how does this work? I know there is not a lot of 4K monitors available, therefore wouldn't the 1080p monitor show 1080p worth of image space in the video frame instead of the full 4K image space? I am puzzled because I think even though the camera is seeing 4K worth of image space, the on-camera add-on monitor will only see 1080p worth of image space and therefore framing would not be inaccurate in terms of scale.

I believe that even though people shoot 4K footage regularly, in their rig I believe they have 1080p or maybe lower resolution on-camera add-on monitors present.

Can you explain?
