cinematography Redheads OR Softboxes

I am looking to invest in my first piece of lighting kit, but am not really sure what to get. I am going to be doing some night filming outside so am looking to get something that will work for this.

i have been looking at something like this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-2400...Accessories&hash=item2eb7209d23#ht_4471wt_927

but was wondering, is it possible to attach gels to these - they don't appear to have clips, would they melt with the heat?

OR would it be better to use soft boxes like these:

The main use for them for the night shooting will be on the street, recreating streetlights
I am new to lighting so would like to do the right thing, thanks

Those soft boxes wouldn't give off enough light for a night shoot. Softer light falls off must faster than hard light. As for the eBay Redheads, I've never used them, but I've heard they're very cheaply made. They might work for a while, but you get what you pay for.
