Recording/Filming a phone call

While I was writing a script this morning a thought came to my mind. How do you actually record a conversation between two people? Like hear the other individual's voice through the phone. Catch my drift?

Record the person who's off screen separately.

ok, i figured that. Just wandered if there was any other specific way.

It's best to record the off-screen talent with a decent mic. During audio post you can then manipulate that audio in dozens of different ways to get the sound you want.

When this is added with ADR, I record them through an actual phone.

More authentic and sounds better in the mix.

But, usually the characters are filmed in their respective locations and the same dialogue is just manipulated in post whenever one of them is not on screen i.e. switching between the two people.
