I own the 701HDV and it's a great head. Especially for smaller cameras such as DSLR's.

I have this one (503HDV). It is what it is. It's not a $1000 head, but you can do competent stuff with it. I JUST ordered the stuff (about $100 worth) to convert the head and my 055XPROD legs to ball head. REALLY sick of leveling the legs.
Hahaha I laughed at your comment, remembering all the times I was making tiny adjustments in the legs and the people around were impatient without understanding the reason for so many 'clicks'.

I'm also TERRIBLE at it. I've spent 4 or 5 minutes before. Add that up over a a bunch of shoots and.... get a ball head.

Only problem I see with this is that there's no handle, so I guess you would have to move the camera around by the body, which could get annoying.

Not if you ever want to move the camera during a shot, no.
I actually really like the 128rc. It's super cheap (~$80) and lightweight, but very smooth in general, and with a camera as light as a DSLR I find it much easier to get truly fluid moves with it than with a larger head like the 501. It has no counterbalancer or anything, so it's not great for things like event shooting with a long zoom lens, but in general that's not the type of thing I'd use a DSLR for in most cases.
I have it paired with a set of manfrotto 535 carbon fiber legs and a 75mm ball head kit for a package that travels really well but still gives a solid base and very fluid moves. That puts everything at about $700, but if you go with aluminum legs instead the whole package would cost less than $300.

A 5D fully rigged (base plate, rails, monitor, heavy lenses) is JUST heavy enough to work smoothly on a 503. It's probably much smoother with a 12 or 14 pound camera on there.
