I have been told that canon's make excellent starting cameras for the quality vs price. I have been looking at the Canon xf100 in particular, but I am very interested what everyone here has to say.
I would buy a video capture DSLR, specifically, the Panasonic GH2, over any prosumer level HD camcorder. It has superior image quality right out of the box, and more importantly, it doesn't have the fixed lens that the XF100 does. Quite simply, it's better in nearly all respects. The Canon DSLRs are fine choices, too.
Well read around the forum there are bunch of threads asking just this very question.
To get you started on your quest I would recommend the Canon t2i paired with an externel audio recorder. Something like the Zoom h4n or H2 for less options but better price!
