cinematography Quick question about HD/SD

Hi There,

i just have a quick question.....

If i am producing a video for DVD is it pointless shooting in HD? because obviously HD isnt supported on run of the mill DVD discs and players

so am i just better off recording in SD format?

It probably seems a stupid question to a lot of you but hey.... just checking :D

Generally speaking, something shot in HD and downresed to SD will look substantially better than something that has always been SD. It will also give you opportunities in post to significantly reframe shots, as well as making visual effects shots easier to composite.

Although there are exceptions to the rule (a professional SD camera recording to DigiBeta will be miles ahead of a cheap, consumer Flip HD), if you have a choice between SD and HD on the same camera, definitely go for the latter.

If you have the capability of shooting HD without added cost, then yes go ahead and shoot it in HD and listen to the above recommendations.

If it's a cost factor, then you can give it more thought.

And remember, something shot in SD with proper lighting, sets, costumes etc etc will look better than something shot in HD without thought to all those aspects.
