Questioning concerning clothing in film

In a few weeks we are going to shoot a “Don’t do Drugs” type PSA. The main character is a high school student cramming for the S.A.T. In efforts to stay awake he takes meth along with high energy drinks and caffeine pills. My question can he wear a College shirt in the film without asking for permission from the school? It’s a State school not a private school.

Thanks.

Since you making this on your own and not for a company,
you can have a character wearing a college logo. Your distribution
of the PSA is limited and if the college objects for any reason
(even a reason YOU disagree with) you will be asked to stop
showing it.

You should ask permission.

I'd ask permission. I film only with blank clothing with no logos whatsoever. Especially with a kid doing drugs before the SAT, that's not an image that college would like their name being part of, even if it is a PSA.

You have nothing to lose by asking your school's administration department what their take on it is. You can always try to alter the plot and spin it so that your school is made to look like they're making an effort to combat drug addiction or something. This approach might complement their own anti-drug message.

If in doubt, go for a generic college shirt that doesn't show the school's name/logo.
