question from newbie starter

OK have a 5-8 k budget to buy equipment, (and I realize part of it must be used to buy lighting). I have seen many fine productions here on the site through the countless links available. my question is I have researched the cameras and it appears that the Panasonic ag-dvx100b or Canon xl2 may be the top of the list (I favor the Panasonic due to the slip out viewfinder, but I realize the xl2 has lens removal options.

Can anyone recommend any other camera of this stature like JVC or Sony that are comparable?

Thanks for the help. In other words What would be a good starter camera of this range type? please post experiences and or links for samples if possible.

The Canon XL series does allow for lens swap outs. The lenses can cost upwards of $500. But if you are investing, maybe that isn't a problem.

I have the Panasonic and I like it.

Quick question: If your budget is 5-8k, how come you are going the now obsolete route of standard definition? You could pick up a Canon XH-A1 (previous non-s version) for 2999.99. It shoots 1080i @ 24f (24 progressive frames, canon's version).

Rode NTG-3 boom kit with aluminum pole for around 800-900.

Edirol R-44 field recorder for 800-900.

Bogen/Manfrotto tripod with fluid head for roughly 500-900 depending on the weight class.

Hard case for the XH-A1 for 350.

Firestore 60gb for 1200.



All that is 7250, assuming all the prices are at the high ends (using the 900's). That leaves 700 dollars (PLENTY) for homemade lights from home depot using work lights and black wrap.
