I a guy who wanted to work on short film of mine was doing a CGI effect to see if it could be done. However I was under the impression that this test FX was just a run through to practice with getting it right before the short. But now he's asking for payment, on the test shot. I will be happy discuss payment on the FX of the feature, but I thought the test shot was just to see if he could do it well enough. Am I being fair, or how should I handle this? Thanks.

Some very low pay was implied when time to do the real project came. But mostly it was implied that were in it to work on our craft and build our portfolios.

Oh I know, I was just asking for second opinions, or whether or not this happens a lot. It's hard to find CGI people locally so I'm unsure what to do.
Nothing is normal, people can charge for what they want to charge for.
Do you want to use his services? Ask him if you use his services if the money paid for the test can be deducted from the total bill. He may agree knowing he is getting the job.

Well I wanted to see the test first, since some CGI looks badly fake compared to others. I have seen previous works of his but they are very different than what I need so I wasn't able to tell how good he was. Plus he said he would do a test shot of what I want to see if it can be done, but no payment was implied in that conversation.
