Question about distribution dealing

I have a question about distribution dealing. When we seel out our movie suppose the amount i invested in the movie is 1 million now when i will sell it to distributor will i will ask for that 1 million only or i will ask for extraa?

or its a game played by us that we show the invesment of 1 million where as the actual amount is 900,000?

can any one tell me who we play with numbers?

You can play with numbers in any way you are comfortable.
If you are comfortable telling a distributor that you spent
less than really you did - then tell them that. And you should
ask for as much as you want. You can ask for 10% or 30%
or 100% above your investment.

Distributors don't make offers based on how much you spent
on the film. They make offers based on how much they think
they can make. If several distributors want your film, the price
will be higher - no matter how much you invested. On the other
hand if you have a difficult to market film, a distributor will
make you a very low offer - no matter how much you invested.

Thanks for the reply. Well can you explain me this

On the other
hand if you have a difficult to market film,

i have read on this community that marketing is all distributors job. then how can we market the film? can you explain this please? and thanks for guiding me. I thought there is a certain rule when we deal with distributor

Marketing is a distributors job. If the distributor feels the movie
you made is difficult to market then they won't offer you (the
filmmaker) a lot of money because they know they (the distributor)
will have to spend a lot more money to market a difficult movie.

There are no "rules" there are only guidelines. You (the filmmaker)
can ask for anything you want. It's not always the best business
practice to play with numbers or to ask for something unrealistic,
The reality is an independent movie is unlikely to get an offer that
exceeds the total investment.

But you can ask.....
