Problem with Final Cut Express

I've got an issue with Final Cut as follows:

When i drag a piece of media from the browser to the viewer, the timeline and canvas close. The timeline and canvas options cant be selected either from the Window tab. Im not sure whether this is a problem that i've by experimenting with some of the settings or whether it is a problem with Final Cut.

Any suggestions?
