It's all about minor tweaks. 10 different filters all at 10% will look infinitely better than 1 filter at 100%.
The big secret is that there aren't any secrets. A large percentage of post is organization and prepping work flow. Have the patience to fully label every clip when doing the initial importing. Keep detailed EDLs. Be patient.
For indie types it can be even harder... Don't be afraid to cut favorite shots/scenes. It can be very hard to take that shot you worked so hard to get and toss it on the cutting room floor. It may be good, or even great, but is it really needed. Objectivity is extremely difficult. So the secret here is to have a collaborator and being willing to listen and do what they tell you.
