Portfolio

Hey everyone, I'm new here - sorry if this post is in the wrong place!

I'm applying to study BA Film for next September, and a few of my unis require evidence in the form of a practical portfolio. I don't have any experience in film, and as I'm sitting my a-levels independently it's kind of hard for me to borrow equipment etc.

Does anyone have any ideas how I could produce a couple of shorts on a super strict budget (I'm pretty skint right now)? I was thinking about buying a cheap second hand camcorder off Ebay and editing some shots from that... does that sound kind of naff?!

I started with a cheap camera and a couple of worklights and clamp lights. It's a great place to start.

I just wrapped as a lighting advisor on a 6 day shoot of a 30 page thriller with combined cast and crew (including extras) of 40-50 people on set every day.

You must start somewhere and if you intend to get into film, having your own camera will allow you to practice constantly (which won't feel like work if it's something you're passionate about).

I love the idea of buying a cheap camera and making a short film. I
don't like the idea of "editing some shots from that" - although I
admit to not knowing exactly what you mean.

it's kind of hard for me to borrow equipment etc.
Everything about making a movie is kind of hard. You could rise to
the challenge an do what is kind of hard. You can be sure that most
everyone applying to that school are doing their very best to get the
very best portfolio they can. You will be competing with people who
have overcome the difficulties and borrowed equipment and have
been making movies for several years.

But if you find it too hard to borrow equipment, then buying a cheap
camera is a fine way to go. Almost all of us here started with a cheap
camera - almost all filmmakers start that way. Make a very good
short film that shows off your talent, dedication and vision as a
filmmaker and the camera choice isn't of much importance.

A great script, good audio, competent actors and great editing will go
a long way to show that.
