Off the wall question

In Death Proof if you watch the "making of" part of the dvd at one point you will see a member of the crew holding what appears to be a palette of colors. It almost looks like water colors but its large. Maybe 18"x18" and the colored squares look like they are 1 inch square. Just wondering what that thing is. I assume its some kind of clapper that can aide in color correction in post?? Anyone know??

I forget the official name, but you're right, its purpose is to aid the colorist in matching the film reels. Any production working with actual film should record this palette with every new reel.

Is this what you're talking about?

i've been on sets where we just called it graycard. But I suppose the official name is that one on the picture.
