editing No IEEE 1394 port. Are there any solution?

I am going to buy mini-DV camera and have Acer Aspire 5820TG notebook without IEEE 1394 port. Are there any solution to pour DV video to my Acer? I have plenty USB ports and HDMI port built-in.

I'm afraid you're out of luck. People do sell Firewire to USB "adapters" but they have limited compatibility, lower the quality of video even further and are no use with logging and capturing from your NLE. Definitely not recommended. The HDMI port will be for output, not input, so isn't any use.

Does your notebook have any cardslots? I'm not sure of the technical name, but if you've got the slot, you can buy a firewire card that just pops in there and then you can plug it in.

I had one a while back, it didn't work too well for me, but I think that was more the fault of Windows Movie Maker not being able to handle it. Or maybe it was my processor.

I've only heard horrible things about firewire to usb adapters.

Do you have any desktop at all in which you could install a true firewire card and just use that as an import hub? The cards are under 10 bucks and easy to install, that would be my #1 choice.

PCMCIA Firewire cards:

Express Card slot Firewire Cards:

Never personally used either cardbus to plug in firewire and use for NLE. Your mileage may vary. I do use a PCIExpress add-on card in my desktop, which works fine in Premiere and in Vegas Pro on both XP and Win 7. Theoretically it should work for a laptop as well.

I did editing with my laptop with these and they work fine for DV, but may not be fast enough for HDV in some cases.

The HDD on that laptop is a mighty 5400 RPM.

Plain DV typically needs 7200 RPM to avoid dropping frames on real-time import.

Just mentioning, 'cos I don't know what camera you have.
