New Business Model for Film Financing

I am looking through an old copy of the Hollywood Creative Directory for Financing that I have and reading through the section of entertainment lawyers.

Do you recommend an entertainment lawyer with expertise in intellectual property and SEC regulations to put together the financing and distribution for independent films? I see a lawyer who has done this for a major Hollywood studio. Would that work for someone in my case looking to make a science fiction movie pilot for cable TV?

I know I will need an entertainment lawyer to shop the film to ShowTime and HBO later to be considered as a filler movie.

PS I called this a new business model because so many people here use crowd funding.

An interesting discussion a producer brought to my attention is that investors who invest in films shot in the USA can take advantage of Tax Code Section 181.

This is another incentive for investors to fund movies shot in the USA.

Film Specific has virtual seminar on that topic http://www.filmspecific.com/public/999.cfm. There is a screenwriting company that does co productions in Canada. Can't remember the name off hand, but they supposedly have done several productions with most of the ex-ense covered by the Canadian government.

The Canadian tax credits are much better known than what is available in the USA. Section 181 is being posted in several film financing boards lately on LinkedIn. I showed the section 181 to a lawyer I am working with. No comment yet, since he is busy and working on pitching our TV series proposal to an investor.
