need a documentary camera

Before worrying about the camera, make sure you have several good mics. People will understand slightly bad video for a docu, but no one can stand bad audio, and with documentaries there is no going back to fix it.

What is your budget for camera and audio setup?

You can find a nice HD cam for under 700 on ebay or even brand new. Check out the canon HV series.

Then check out Alcove Audio's blog. He has a basic audio setup laid out that would run you approx 750 bucks.

camera

you can look at the canon hv40 that is a little camera that shoots 1080. It also has audio in and out. I use a rode shot gun mic for it. If you wanted to get that set up it would be around 775 if I remember right. Check stuff out on B & H photo you can get a good feel for what is out there.
