Marketing a micro-budget in a small city

A friend and I produced / directed a feature film 2 years ago and have been doing post production since then. We are finished the film now and are going to be playing it in July at a local theatre in which you can rent for screenings or concerts and such. It holds 225 people. We've already sold out one show, and the other one hopefully soon. However, this won't even allow us to make our budget back.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on marketing a movie made with $5000 or less in a city of about 700,000 people. It appears to be very hard for a low-budget film to catch major interest from an average person, because most people are used to what a hollywood film looks like. It has really only garnered interest within the film community.

Does anyone have any success stories within a similar context?

If you have any ideas, please discuss them here. Please look at www.shadowswithin pictures and http://youtube.com/watch?v=rNRuMD6GfhU for trailers. This may help you understand what and how things could be marketed.

Thanks

I hear ya!

It's very difficult for a low budget film to reach an audience. I bet you
don't pay to see too many movies made by filmmakers you don't know
starring actors you've never heard of.

It's sad that even us low budget filmmaker don't financially support
each other by paying to see the movies. But we don't.

However, it DOES happen. Lo budget films get out there and they make
money. You might have to follow a more traditional path. Enter your
movie in film festivals and send screeners to distributors.

Congrats on selling out two showings!

Thanks alot. I appreciate the comment.

We certainly will be sending to festivals and hope for the best. It was mainly a learning project to begin with, but we came out with a pretty good first feature film.

Again, thank you.

Well done on getting to this point... that's a major achievement.

I've one very specific suggestion. Do a person search on this site for "Mr Modern Life"

Phil, who goes under that handles has successfully sold and distributed a couple of micro-budget movies in this genre... and I think he's also now running a sale agency for them.

Either way, he'd be the person I'd talk to.

I'd also like it if you pm'd me your email address, because I run a magazine on micro-budget feature film production and I'd like to run an article on your film.
