making money?

How do filmmakers like rodriguez and tarantino make money off of movies??

I'm not talking about movie ticket sales, but the actual money on hand of the filmmaker.

Each movie has a budget. Out of that budget the
people who make the movie are paid. The cast is
paid, the grips are paid, the scripty is paid, the PA's
are paid and the director is paid.

People in the below the line catagory on a movies
budget are typically paid weekly. People like the lead
cast, the writer, the producer and the director are
considered above the line and they are typically paid
the entire amount upon start of work.

A funny thing I remember reading about Star Wars (ANH): to save on budget, most of the cast and crew took a percentage of the royalties as payment. Harrison Ford and John Williams insisted on being paid up front, which turned out to be so so so much less. They're also the only two people who had much of a career after Star Wars... :D

Um, Guinness? James Earl Jones? Mark Hamil is a top voice-over talent. He was in Team America.
