Looking to buy a new camera

Hey everyone, I'm a beginner filmmaker and I've been wanting to upgrade from my Sony DV Handycam.

I've had it for 5 or so years and want to get something that will give me better quality videos. What do you guys recommend? I have a budget of about $700-1000.

Also, are most modern cameras able to work on both mac's and pc's?
