Hiya one and all.
I have shot my first short, had all kinds of compliments thrown at it by the good folks of Indietalk (although that was just a rough cut) and even had someone like it so much they now want to spend money shooting a music vid on the back of it. Unfortunately, the money is not with me, but they were waxing lyrical about a quick and dirty test shoot and want to go further.
However, I have huge difficulty finding collaborators and crew in London. It is crazy that in a City of 8 million people, I cannot find people who want to help out on set and shoot movies. I have advertised all over the place, attracted a few people who were all pretty flakey in one way or another and just cannot attract people who are passionate and happy to learn.
Sure, I am incredibly fortunate to have friends who are happy to help out, a DoP who is fully professional and shooting a multi-million dollar feature next year (he's doing stuff for free because he just likes my shorts!!!!!) but finding half-decent, committed new crew is painfully difficult. This is even more curious because I have been shooting in a couple of outstanding locations which I cannot name for legal reasons (I signed waivers...) and seem to be progressing.
As an idea, someone from a large, London creative agency saw my first short and liked it to the point I am meeting up with them! (It's not that good, but it's challenging and interesting from an artistic perspective).
So what do you do to attract additional people in London? How do you go about finding them, engaging with them and getting them to turn up to your short? Don't get me wrong, everyone who said they'd turn up to the short turned up but the 'attraction' element was the trickiest and I had a number of totally wasted meetings with people who claimed to have kit (which they clearly didn't have) or said they'd commit and then pulled out.
What do you do?
