Line in != Mic?

Hey guys, so I just got a used iriver X20 for 40 bucks, solely for the use of audio recording. Now, line-in works when i'm playing songs off my zune on the X20, but when I plug in a simple headset mic or laptop mic i can't hear anything - which worries me, because the only reason I got a 4 year old mp3 player was to record with a mic.

Now, I have a shotgun mic coming in that's powered by an AA battery - could it be that since the other mics aren't powered, the iriver can't pick them up? That's what I'm hoping. :/

I have a pocket amp that i'm going to try to see if it helps the mics any. edit: nope. didn't make em work.

pre amp with a line out will get you what you need... microphones use a different signal strength than line, causing the annoyance that you're having - sorry you're going through it. Mics are quite weak signals comparatively.

Anything with a preamp will work in a pinch... Laptop (mic in), stereo, etc...

You should consider a small mixer... You could record more than one mic at a time, and it would fix your preamp situation.
