The Los Angeles Film Festival showcases the best of American and international cinema to a diverse audience of over 60,000 people, uniting emerging and established filmmakers with critics, journalists, film industry professionals, and the movie-loving public. The Festival is recognized as "one of the best film festivals in the United States" (FILMMAKER Magazine) and as "an essential stop on the North American circuit" (Daily Variety).
The Los Angeles Film Festival has earned its reputation among filmmakers for many reasons, including:
It puts on the exclusive, intimate Filmmaker Retreat, a relaxed two-day getaway hosted by the Festival's annual Guest Director. Past Guest Directors have included Sydney Pollack, Mira Nair, Chen Kaige, and Alfonso Cuarón.
It presents the largest cash prizes of any festival in North America: the $50,000 Target Filmmaker Award and the $50,000 Target Documentary Award.
It is a festival attended by the film industry. Companies such as Focus Features, Fox Searchlight Pictures, IFC Films, Lions Gate Films, Sony Pictures Classics, and Warner Independent Pictures are members of our Industry Circle, and representatives from CAA, Picturehouse Films, Roadside Attractions, United Talent Agency, and the William Morris Agency are among those that serve on the Festival Advisory Committee. Recent acquisitions from the Festival include Rock School, Mayor of the Sunset Strip, Kissing Jessica Stein, Washington Heights, and OT: our town.
It offers Kodak Speed Dating, a program in which the Festival schedules a series of one-on-one meetings between Festival filmmakers and leading industry professionals. Some of the Speed Dating participants at the 2005 Festival were Marc Butan (President, 2929 Entertainment), Suzanne Fedak (Head of Theatrical, Koch Lorber Films), Larry Greenberg (Senior Director of Acquisitions, Showtime Networks), Marcus Hu (Co-President, Strand Releasing), Sejin Park (Manager of Acquisitions, New Line Home Entertainment), Shaun Redick (Agent, ICM), Mark Sourian (Feature Development, DreamWorks), and Ricky Strauss (President, Participant Productions), to name just a few.
It gets extensive local, national, and international media coverage, with over 350 accredited press from outlets including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, Access Hollywood, Extra, KCRW-FM, KABC TV, indieWIRE, and the BBC.
It is a qualifying festival for the Independent Spirit Awards, and it is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the Short Films categories of the Annual Academy Awards®.
