Jello

Everyone knows what the rolling shutter, better known as the "jello effect" is, right?

Good. I wanted to do a scene where a main character is having a drug trip, and in POV shot, I want to put this effect to use.

My question is: what settings should I set my camera to, to get the jello effect at its very worst? (or in the case of this shot, the "best")

You really just have to whip the hell out of the camera. I'm not entirely sure this is gonna get the effect you're looking for.

I'm thinking you might wanna play around with some slit-scan.

This might be one of those few times that it's a better idea to fix it in post.

You can get all kinds of crazy effects & filters to warp, distort & colour your footage after the fact.

What kind of trip are we talking about, anyhow? :bag:

I just want a 3-4 second shot with this jello effect. Does shaking it create more, or whipping fast? I'm not entirely sure how to get it at its worst.

You have to do a whip-pan to make it noticeable, and even then, many "regular" (non-filmmaker) audience-members still don't notice it. I'm in agreement with Zensteve -- fix it in post (and do some googling for slit-scan).

It doesn't really matter how noticeable it is, I was just going for this effect because I've seen videos of it, and it appears to be what I want. Really easy distortion.

it parodies that cliche, because there's really nothing that causes the hallucinations, it just happens, and he trips like a drug addict on energy drinks (which don't do that, obviously.)
