archived-videos Isolated - Short Horror Film

The bad:
Lots of sound issues
The constant hiss, the noticeable change in the sound between some edits, the overall 'normalization" of the sound as well.

Might not be as bad on a larger screen, but in the embedded video it's awfully dark. I understand the mood and tone, but sometimes there just isn't much on screen but a black void.

The Good;
Acting isn't bad.
Some nice choice of shots.
Some of the night scenes are actually lit pretty well.
use of incidental music is pretty well done.

Yeah we did a lot of cleaning up with the sound but I have to admit I missed a number of things. The Rode Videomic just doesn't work well with the 550D...

Wish I had a faster lens too, this was only a 3.5.

Thanks for the feedback.

The sound didn't bother me too much, but the movie seemed like a scene out of a larger picture. Is that the goal, to make a movie around this couple?

My aim was certainly to have the feeling that the audience suddenly pick up with these characters, as if we're only witnessing a small part of their journey. Not planning a feature but I wanted to do this short film to test for possibly a longer zombie horror in the future, with all the practical make-up we used and of course filming at night.

Nothing wrong with that, good plan. Take what happened (like the sound issues), and figure out how to get a bettter result next time.

My methodology (that I hope is working), is to do a post mortem on a film. Look at what worked, and what didn't, then think about the "why". "Why" did I get sound that I had to work so hard in post to just make passable? Is the recorder no good, is the mic no good, is the sound guy no good, were we too focused on this, and didn't pay enough attention to that. Then "How do I fix it next time". The same thing applies to every aspect of production. "why did I have to make that wonky edit", "What coverage should I have shot?", "Why didn't I?", etc...

"We'll be safe here." Bad decision. I wish people in horror movies had better judgement. It always breaks my suspension of disbelief. Maybe a little more trivial dialogue in the beginning to introduce the characters so we care about them when they are slaughtered. Lighting and acting are well-done I think, could have been a little brighter in some shots, but I kind of liked the light-streak effect of the characters, especially when the girl is running. I liked the ending, but I've seen it a bunch, in Drag Me To Hell, and I think Zombie Land, he even had a rule to always check the back seat. All in all pretty good, look forward to seeing more. :)

Haha agreed, there are a number of cliches and things I would do differently if I were to do this again. But that's what happens, it's all learning! Thanks, glad you liked it for the most part.
