IRS Section 181 deduction

After researching the Section 181 tax deduction for film production, I'm still unclear on one point. If I invested in a friend's film last year (2008), can I take the deduction on the total amount of the investment, or only on the percentage of the investment that was expended on the production during last year? Filming did begin in 2008, but is not yet complete.
