Interpol - Lights (by Charlie White)

This is one of the coolest music videos I've stumbled upon lately by the uber talented photographer Charlie White. I would like to make something along these lines someday.

To me, this is eye candy. Abstract, evocative, bizarre, and sans band. More please.

What do you think?

I guess I can appreciate this, but I don't have the attention span it requires to fully be in love with it. Maybe that's a statement about me rather than the video, but I kept waiting for something to happen.

I'm with you, Flicker. I'd love to make something like this someday. Sometimes the less I understand upon first viewing the happier I am. Makes me dive in a second/third/fourth time.

@brianluce - you too?

@CamVader - it is very slow and deliberate and, yeah, there isn't much that "happens" but if one considers it a series of interesting and unusual still (or slow moving) images, maybe that helps put it in a different light. no story here! or is there?? ;)

@UC - yep. sometimes the less I understand the more I want to figure out and let sink in over time.

I can appreciate all variety of shooting styles. The smooth camera moves and slow pacing is something I'd like to spend more time experimenting with in the future.

If you haven't seen Charlie White's photo work it's worth a gander.

And, while on the topic of art photographers, Cindy Sherman is super cool, too.

Meh.

Though I love Interpol, the video didn't wow me. Its shots were very repetitious; all slow motion, with fades to black in between for most of it. The art director and costume designer did the heavy lifting, but even the costumes and props are standard, well-worn fetish tropes. German latex fetish-wear makers Marquis were making videos much cooler and weirder than this 20 years ago.

It's me, not you. Maybe some Pink Floyd, a beanbag chair, and a spliff would get me there.

The art director and costume designer did the heavy lifting,

Yeah, those two aspects sell the look of it.

True. Nothing new under the sun. Maybe I'm reacting to it because I've been watching so many narrative music videos, looking at pretty pictures is a refreshing break.

Mind if I join you? :abduct:

It is pretty interesting. I can see why you like it. Thanks for sharing it and those photographers.

I got to see Sherman's "Film Stills" in person! Amazing work. That experience informed my decision to make movies.

So, tell me about the technical aspects of filming this. I'm watching this thing a lot. I'm wondering how he achieved the slow motion. Is this "over cranking," or was it shot in real time and then slowed down in post? I wouldn't discount how much Mr. White's hand had in directing the Art Director and Make-up Artist, but I do like their work. I really like the simplicity and elegance of this video. Do we know things like what he shot it with?
